Greg Walsh is a piano/vocalist/songwriter based in Australia, who will be performing solo for one show only at Blujazz, 11 Bali Lane on Tuesday 25th May, 9 pm.

His style has a blues/rock/jazz flavor and he will be performing original songs from his recent album “A Busy Street” plus some of the great classic covers form the past.

Walsh’s music history spans several decades, many genres and music scenes. He has recorded two EPs in that time. He has moved from classical piano to rock bands to solo synth techno freak, to making a living from the soul/blues/pop piano bar environment where he dissected, analyzed and played some of the best songs written over the past century. Now he is reborn again, still on the piano but with more original music.

Influences include: Stevie Wonder, Nina Simone, Billie Holiday, Etta James, Jan Hammer, and Vince Jones to name a few. More recently influences have come from the New Orleans blues school, especially of the great piano players such as Dr. John and Professor Longhair.

Walsh has a unique warm voice and bluesy piano playing. Comparisons include: “sounds like Ali Campbell” (UB40), “sounds like Vince Jones“, “The White Ray Charles“.

“And he’s not just a fine piano player. Greg possesses an eclectic musical style, ranging from blues, to jazz, to soul and rock, and what’s even better is the fact that he owns an incredible voice.” – Australian Musician Magazine.

“The very special sound of Walsh’s voice makes it difficult to compare with other singers.” – rootstime.com.be

“Vocally he has a classic jazz range with smooth husky undertones” – Melodys Eye On Music.

In October 2008, he launched his 12 track all original music album “A Busy Street” at Dizzy’s Jazz Club with seven piece band.

It has songs with orchestrations ranging from full rich vocals, piano, drums, bass, guitar, Hammond organ, synths, violin, viola, and cello, to the more sparse sound of just vocals, piano and drums. There has been confirmed airplay of the album so far on at least 25 radio stations including some international ones.

Currently songs #1 “A Busy Street” and #2 “Do What You Say You’ll Do” are being aired in Australia on Foxtel’s Air Roots channel and Song #12 “Pool of Love” made it into the final six of the 2008 Nab Songwriting contest.

(Source: http://rockandroots.com.sg / Photo courtesy of Bluesfest)

Timbre Rock & Roots is a two-day evening festival to be held on 26 & 27 March 2010 at the Marina Promenade, Singapore, featuring a host of world-class musicians, Grammy Awards winners and nominees.

Timbre Rock & Roots is a joint collaboration project between Timbre Music Pte Ltd (of Ublues Group) and Bluesfest Pty Ltd, the organiser behind one of the world’s most prominent music festivals, East Coast Blues Festival also known as Bluesfest (Byron Bay, Australia) headed by its festival director, Mr. Peter Noble.

Timbre Music has been presenting an myriad of artists through its Timbre chain of live music bars and a strong portfolio of music events since its inception. Rock & Roots is a true testament to Timbre Music’s mandate of bringing quality musicians to Singapore audiences regardless of artists’ origins. This is in line with Bluesfest’s programming decree.

An industry veteran, Mr. Peter Noble has led Bluesfest to be one of world’s most acclaimed and respected festivals, and one of the most highly awarded. After 20 years, it is still the inspiration for dozens of blues and roots festivals in Australia.

It all started when Danny Loong (Ublues Group Chief Creative Director) with his former band Ublues Band) performed at Bluesfest 2004. Ublues Band was the first ever band from Asia to perform at the festival and was placed on the main Mojo stage alongside performances by Soul Icon, James Brown among other amazing bands. The festival hoisted up the Singapore flag while the band was playing and that moment brought tremendous pride to Danny. Since then, Danny and Peter kept in touch and the idea of organising a festival in Singapore was mooted.

This eventually became a possibility in 2008 and the partners then spent the next two years creating Timbre Rock & Roots.

Timbre Rock & Roots is not just about the best international bands playing in Singapore but as well as the possibility of having our best Singapore bands play at Bluesfest in the future. Timbre Rock & Roots is ultimately a collaboration derived from mutual respect and the passion for music, and we will be hoisting the many flags of talent from all over the world.

Timbre Rock & Roots aims to become an annual festival and eventually to be an iconic event as part of the live music calendar here in Singapore.

I remember that day very well… A guy named George showed me a matt grey Kramer and a red U.S. made Fender Stratocaster Standard with Lace Sensor pick ups. I chose the Fender, not because it is one of the most iconic guitars in the world but just because it was red.

Ahh, the good ol’ days when I knew jack shit about guitars… Hmm, come to think of it, I still know jack shit about guitars today.

Anyway, here’s some info about Swee Lee taken from their website:

Swee Lee Company was founded in 1946 after World War II in response to the local British military band’s need for brass and woodwind instruments. The birth of Rock ‘n’ Roll in the 1950s kick-started public demand for popular musical instruments, and Swee Lee was there to supply them with their various needs. With the formation of the Scouts movements, other local uniform groups and school bands, the music business flourished.

Since the 1960s, Swee Lee has been able to identify and capitalise on market trends in the music industry, quickly moving and expanding into various segments of the music business.

Today, Swee Lee provides music education and professional audio visual consultancy services through its subsidiaries. Swee Lee has grown from being a local merchant of musical instruments to a regional distributor of specialist concert equipment, Pro Audio equipment and Audio DSP equipment, with a network of offices in Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, Hong Kong, China and India. We are proud to carve our niche as a distributor of musical instruments and accessories, representing foreign brands of musical instruments such as Peavey, Roland, Fender, Gibson, Epiphone, Ibanez, Tama, Pearl, Sabian, Premier, Laney, D’addario, Selmer Paris and Karl Hofner, amongst many others.

For more information on their location, contact details and opening hours, click on this link: Swee Lee Company.

SYNOPSIS

Gloriously deviant since 1994, British alternative band Placebo, charge into 2010 reborn and renewed, for a spectacular concert scheduled on 18th March at Fort Canning Park.

Placebo are Brian Molko, Stefan Olsdal and Steve Forrest. Defying conventions, critics and the odds, Placebo stand strong in 16 years with 6 studio albums, over 10 million copies sold and one devoted following worldwide.

The concert will showcase their latest album, Battle for the Sun, released in 2009.

Battle for the Sun marks a new chapter in the band’s impressive history.

After several chance meetings bumping into each other at local watering holes between 2000 and 2002 and numerous ad hoc jam sessions together thereafter, the duo formed EIC in July 2002.

Since then, they have been regularly entertaining full-house crowds with their brand of infectious music covering bands like U2, Coldplay, Oasis, Jason Mraz, John Mayer and the Dave Matthews Band at Timbre, CM-PB, Balaclava and Wala Wala.

In December 2006, after going around the local bar circuit as a cover band, Jack & Rai decided to take up the challenge of releasing an album of self penned originals.

Collaborating with producer and A&R consultant, Amir Masoh and after a full year of planning, conceptualising and recording, the duo released their debut album ‘In Stores Now!’ in 2009.

It is now available in music stores and can be downloaded via iTunes as well.

Their album comprises 11 original tracks which relate their honest stories and experiences:

1. Beetle Girl
2. The Fa La La Song
3. Fiona
4. Contemplate
5. Us
6. Pixelated
7. Hurricane
8. Poof
9. Television Affair
10. Release Me
11. Prophet of Universal Love

Have a look at their music video of their song ‘Release Me’:

Jack & Rai have also written & performed several songs for TV including the opening theme for ‘Polo Boys’ and ‘As I Am’ (which I absolutely love), a song for the Mediacorp Ch5 drama series ‘Red Thread’.

Currently, they can be heard on air co-hosting a radio show with Jean Danker as well. They’re on Class 95FM every Monday and Friday from 7 -- 8pm.
